As of 1 July 2024, the long-awaited and discussed Act on Civil Class Proceedings and related amendments to other regulations, in particular the Code of Civil Procedure, came into force. The new legislation is based on the EU Directive on representative actions for the protection of consumers' collective interests. It allows consumers and small businesses to sue the same business together in a single legal proceeding. Class actions are a major innovation in the Czech legal system.
Qualified non-profit organizations can file a lawsuit on behalf of consumers with the Municipal Court in Prague. These non-profit organizations must be registered on the list maintained by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and meet other statutory conditions. In the proceedings, they are obliged to be represented by a lawyer.
